This collection of writings on training in Aikido, a traditional mind-body art, comes from the perspective of two instructors, Michelle L. Tate and Lisa R. Tomoleoni, who see themselves as lifelong students of the art.
Presented alternatively in pithy prose and delightful verse interspersed with excellent photographs, this book takes the reader through the authors’ journey of life lessons gained through sustained training.
We get an insider’s view of training at the Aikido Hombu Dojo and in Iaido from Tomoleoni Sensei and glimpses of the landscape shaped by Aikido in Tate Sensei’s mind.
What shines through the narration is their sense of gratitude for the art and their teachers.
Together these two viewpoints combine to create a book that is hoped to be inspirational, and to share the growth, challenge, joy and fulfillment that this particular form of training has brought them, and continues to bring to their lives.

I don't practice Aikido, but I believe that the lessons learned and stories told in this book can translate to anyone's life or spiritual practice/journey. Even though my path, teachers, and "mat" are different than Lisa and Michelle's, I could relate to many of the stories and connect them to my personal experiences. The reader can really feel the passion they have for Aikido, and it was inspiring to read how a discipline can transcend the physical aspects and have a deep impact on your life if you let it. My Kindle copy now has lots of bookmarked pages and highlighted passages that I'm sure I will revisit.Product details

Along the Way edition by Lisa Tomoleoni Michelle Tate Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
This lovely little volume is filled with stories and memories of one of the author's time studying Aikido in Japan as well as beautiful poetry, pictures and quotes. While yoga is my practice, I resonated with the love and respect they have for their art and their teachers. Anyone on a spiritual journey will find wisdom and laughter in these pages.
I am a Japanese and I am also training Aikido for many years. I felt this book was written by the author who was more Japanese than the real Japanese. It gave us the opportunity to rethink our life and Aikido training. Surprisingly, I could find many helpful hints for us, too. I like this book and I want to recommend this to not only Aikido people but also my friends interested in Aikido. Thanks, Lisa.
The simple fact is that if you train, you should read this book. This book appealed to me in in so many dimensions - from its authors' ability to find the profound in the mundane and everyday trials of training, to the vivid vignettes of training in Japan.
To have collected a lifetime of lessons in relatively short time is one thing, but to be able to convey them in a compact but engaging book is another. As a longtime practitioner of Aikido, I also enjoyed the brief glimpses into the lives of world-class teachers.
This is a book I will return to often, and I am sure that despite its conciseness, I will find something new every time I pick it up.
This is a thoughtful and sincerely written book that risks much in the story it tells and the way it tells it. The passion for the art that the two authors study is evident. It is a very heartfelt work that Aikido students and other martial artists (or people with no interest or experience in martial arts) should find a worthwhile read, particularly if inclined to the contemplative, trans-formative aspects of any path of spiritual discipline. In that case, it could prove a favorite for you. The anecdotes regarding various famous Aikido teachers in Japan are alone worth the time to read. I learned; and I have already used one method a teacher mentioned in the book used in helping his student make a break-through in her thinking. Give it a read! I will again.
Full-disclosure - the authors are my Aikido teachers, but I'll try to keep that aside in my review of this book. It is not hard to do so, because the contents of the book are as refreshingly new to me as they are to someone encountering these writers for the first time. I remember pestering Tomoleoni Sensei on numerous occasions for some vignettes of her training at the Hombu Dojo, but rather than talk, she preferred to live out her experiences on and off the mat for us students to draw from as we saw fit. This book offers a peek into how those lessons took root over years of training, as she describes the influences of her own teachers - from the late Kisshomaru Doshu to the present Moriteru Doshu, spanning many Aikido Shihan in between, but she reserves some of her most wistful memories for her late Iaido teacher, Takayama Sensei. Tate Sensei is a published writer, but this book delves into what training in Aikido has done for her or as she puts it - what she can do in return as a mark of gratitude. That is a common theme - gratitude for the art and teachers, whether they be people or circumstances, that have shaped their lives. The second thread is honesty in the form of an unflinching look at the challenges that continuous training inevitably throws up and their own little triumphs and missteps in dealing with those challenges.
The book is presented in both prose and verse. Entirely in character, I suppose, as the direct lines from Tomoleoni Sensei enter the reader's mind to make a connection and the circling verse from Tate Sensei encourage the reader to move with it to arrive at a completely different perspective. Irimi Tenkan!
In keeping with the spirit of the book, I would like to end these comments with a heart-felt 'Domo Arigatou Gozaimashita, Sensei'.
