Have you ever arrived on the scene of a house fire to find a frantic woman in the driveway? As a firefighter, you know instinctively what this means there is a child inside. You immediately enter "the zone" because you know what to do. This is based on your training and experience. The feeling of being "in the zone", is referred to in the field of positive psychology as "the flow".
Multiple studies have shown that, if people have the proper training and experience, they will make better decisions in emerging situations while in a flow-state. How can your organization help your people experience flow more often, thereby improving their decision-making?
This book describes what flow is and what flow-based decision making and flow-based leadership look like. It also details a flow-based leadership model for implementation, based on an extreme, experiential training program in the fire service called Georgia Smoke Diver (GSD). This model consists of
- Leading by example
- Communicating purpose
- Committing to a stable infrastructure
- Binding the group through ritual, knowledge sharing, and collaboration
- Honoring individual creativity to promote innovation
- Using positive motivation techniques
- Facilitating team flow

When the tones drop for a structure fire you already have a game plan, and arriving on scene you go into auto-pilot and just do what needs to be done. When something doesn't go according to plans, you adapt and overcome without giving it any thought.Never before had I realized there was a name for being "in the zone" or "on top of your A game". This book examines this and teaches you how to use it to its full potential, even in non-emergency situations.
Well researched and very well written.

FlowBased Leadership (Audible Audio Edition) Judith L GlickSmith PhD Lee Ahonen Technics Publications Books Reviews
I spent my adult life in the fire service- 25 years. I'm retired now. I was fortunate to work within a strong fire department system dedicated to firefighter safety and operational excellence. Still, the fire service culture is not without it's challenges.
I was really looking forward to this book because it offers what I think is sorely needed in the fire service, a more collaborative, mindful, and creative fire service culture.
I enjoyed this book right up until chapter 5, "Georgia Smoke Diver Model." Prior to this chapter, the author speaks of Crew Resource Management, Boyd's Loop, Klein's Recognition-primed decision making, Situational awareness models, human factors, checklists, system 1 and 2 thinking; this is outstanding!
Then, in chapter 5, we step into the very culture I had hoped the author was attempting to address. "The instructors at Georgia Smoke Divers all wear khaki pants, black t-shirts, and black ball caps with numbers emblazoned on them." Only until recently, those outside of Georgia were not able to attend Georgia Smoke Divers. The "Board of Elders" makes strategic decisions for the GSD organization. The Board of Elders added the level of "Deacon." The leader of the GSD program is called a "Smoke Daddy." The GSD program graduated the first female, smoke diver number 976, in 2017.
It should be obvious to the author that her work- creative suspension, gentle action, flow- are at odds with much of existing fire service culture. As I read about GSDs as presented by the author, I couldn't help but to note the male-dominated, militaristic, bravado so common to the fire service, but which I thought the author was showing an alternative.
I'm trying to decide if the rest of the book is worth my time at this point, as chapter 6 uses GSD's model to discuss creating flow-based organizations.
I really enjoyed this book to chapter 4 and believe it's worth the read. The author's heart is in the right place, but chapter 5 negates her very work in chapters 1-4; in my opinion.
Easy read for anyone studying leadership theories. Was recommended to me by a fire chief. The model of resiliency was really helpful.
I read this book and found it to be enlightening. I found the focus of the book to be quite interesting. I have narrowed my focus on work individuals and groups to put more personnel in position to excel. Thank you for your revelations on leadership in a form thats easy to read and makes improvement a natural part of work teams. Hope to see more books from this author............
Flow is an ancient spiritual experience explored extensively by the Taoists. More recently, the field of positive psychologists has identified the mental and physical features of this concept. Dr. Glick-Smith has documented flow experiences in Georgia firefighters. Her research contributes to the knowledge base about leadership and team building. This book represents a definite advancement in the understanding of process in challenging group activities. Implications for office groups are explored. I highly recommend this book for leadership training and team building in a variety of settings. Dr. Phyllis Cave, retired clinical psychologist
